Who are The Songmen?

The Songmen are a male-voice a cappella vocal group comprising six professional singers. Guy Lewis and Ben Sawyer (countertenor), Rob Waters (tenor), Christopher Monk (baritone), Nick Ashby (baritone) and Jonathan Beasley (bass). We have been singing together for several years and have built a strong reputation for quality men's voice singing.

What kind of performances do you do?

We undertake a wide variety of performances. Most typically concerts in concert halls and large churches, but we look to take our music wherever it will be appreciated. Single concerts, festival appearances, recordings and tours. A typical concert would include a selection from our current repertoire including both sacred and secular work, though we do tailor concert programmes for the occasion.

What kind of music do you perform?

We pride ourselves on our significantly wide repertoire. We maintain a set of published programmes which can be found here. Typically, we range from 15th/16th century polyphony, through European chanson and madrigals, English folksong, American spirituals, 20th century jazz, soul and pop.

How much do you charge?

It depends on the situation, whether it be a straightforward concert from our current repertoire, through to festival adjudication, education work within a school (possible including a concert) or performance at home and abroad. We are a professional vocal ensemble and our services are not an 'off the shelf' product – we like to work with our clients and friends to ensure we provide the service they require. Do get in touch with our agents via our contacts page to discuss any potential opportunities.

Can I request specific music I want for my event?

We are very happy to discuss your requirements, please contact us. If we do not have the piece you want in our standard repertoire, then there are various options still available, from purchasing a suitable existing arrangement through to commissioning a bespoke arrangement.

What does a cappella mean?

Its literal translation is "in the style of the church", but it refers to music that is performed by human voice without accompaniment from any instruments. There are six men in the The Songmen and all the music you will hear in our concerts will be sung by one or all of the men of the group. Though we are quite happy to perform occasionally at very specially events with additional accompaniment, The Songmen are, and always will be, principally an a cappella group.

Do Songmen undertake solo work?

Yes, all the members of the group are professional singers and can be booked either individually or any combination for events. But note, The Songmen are all six members of the group and would only ever perform under that name when we are all there! We do not emply deps.

Do you perform abroad?

We enjoy performing abroad. Our base in the Cotswolds places us conveniently near Birmingham London and Bristol airports, combined with the UK's good train and ferry links mean that we can travel easily and quickly to almost any worldwide destination.
